PUSHOUT: FILM AND GUIDED DISCUSSION FOR PRACTITIONERS, FIELD-BASED SUPERVISORS, AND GRADUATE STUDENTS:

Join us for an interactive, FREE 2-hour professional development event focused on increasing school psychologists’ awareness and knowledge related to the criminalization and school pushout of Black girls. Two continuing education credits (CEs) will be offered. Registration for each event will be first come, first served and capped at 25 participants to allow for ideal break out groups for the guided discussion portion of the event.

The event will include a film screening of “PUSHOUT: THE CRIMINALIZATION OF BLACK GIRLS IN SCHOOLS following by a guided discussion. This feature-length documentary takes a close look at the educational, judicial and societal disparities facing Black Girls. Inspired by the groundbreaking book of the same name by the renowned scholar Monique W. Morris, Ed.D., the documentary confronts the ways in which the misunderstanding of Black girlhood has led to excessive punitive discipline which in turn disrupts one of the most important factors in their lives, their education.”

These events are part of an approved research study to examine the impact of social issue documentary film as a pedagogical tool for social justice training. Participation is fully online and will take approximately 2 ½ hours via the Zoom platform. Following the 75-minute film screening, participants will be asked to join a 50-minute guided discussion focused on steps that trainers and school psychologists can take to reduce school-to-confinement pathways and offer culturally relevant mental health supports. Guided discussions will be led by Drs. Jennifer Cooper and Candice Aston along with graduate student research assistants trained in engaging, sustaining and deepening interracial dialogue and addressing racial disparities. The discussions will be audio recorded; however, no names or other identifying information will be transcribed during data analysis.

Following the event, participants will be asked to complete a brief anonymous survey focused on their event experience and implications for training and practice. Participants will also be entered into a drawing to win one of two book volumes(~$100 value) including a). Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools, b). Sing A Rhythm, Dance a Blues: Liberatory Education for Black and Brown Girls and c). Critical Theories for School Psychology and Counseling: A Foundation for Equity and Inclusion in School-based Practice.

After registering, participants will receive a link to the Zoom event.
